Growing closer to God’s word has never been a priority for me. I’ve been a Christ-follower my entire life. I’ve always believed in and prayed to God, but I got really serious about my relationship and walk with Him 16 years ago. That’s when I surrendered my life to Him and became a born-again Christian. I’ve prayed for healing since my first real stomachache at age 8 or 9 – and I’ve been praying ever since.
But until just a few years ago, I’ve been feeling the great nudge to read His word daily and commit to spending time with Him.
My Relationship with God Now
I believe that God has been preparing me my whole life for this new life change. It has taken me 28 years to learn how to eat, what to eat, and when to eat. Through my years of research and food elimination, I’ve learned how to read labels, how to read my body’s reactions towards foods, how to chew well for the best digestion (still working hard on this), how to eat slowly so I don’t overeat (still working on this one too) and most importantly, I’ve learned how to accept what my body can’t tolerate (this was a HARD one — no more bread. I’m still crying over this).
It has been a long and arduous road, but I believe that God has been strengthening me and preparing me for this next stage of my life as I move towards complete healing. Though the past years have brought fear and doubt at times, my belief that God is with me and taking care of me has helped carry me. His peace is what sustains me and strengthens me.
Although I pray every day and talk to God throughout the day, I am not a religious bible reader. I do not even read my Bible consistently. I go through cycles – I’m either very serious about reading the bible, or I fizzle and don’t read it at all.
I WANT to be more disciplined.
I WANT to make spending time with God my daily habit; (even on the weekends — this is the challenging one).
By writing this plan, I hold myself accountable. With this plan, I will take my words and turn them into action.
God & My Health Journey
How will reading and studying the bible help heal me you ask?
Well… God’s word is alive and true. Learning His word and declaring His word out loud brings healing, brings peace, and leaves no room for the enemy to operate in your mind. It removes all negativity because God is only good. His word restores you when you feel like giving up. His word reminds you that, “God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God” (Romans 8:28). God wants you and me to be healthy and strong – mentally and physically. How can we live out our life’s purpose if we are tired and weak?
By growing closer to God’s word, I will learn what words to pray when I am exhausted and fragile. I will learn what words to say and declare out loud to override any negativity that creeps up in my mind.
I want to feel his comfort when I’m afraid.
I want to feel his peace when I feel doubt.
I want to feel his strength when I am weary.
Reading the bible will provide this for me.
I believe in Jesus’ name I WILL be healed. My body and mind will get stronger.
I will become a wiser disciple for His kingdom, through this process, as my relationship with God grows.
The Action Plan — Growing Closer to God’s Word
- Wake up earlier and dedicate 20 to 30 minutes a day to prayer, bible reading and bible study. (Come close to God and He will come close to you – James 4:8)
- Continue with my bedtime bible readings with my children. (Train up a child in the way he should go. Even when he is old he will not depart from it – Proverbs 22:6)
- Work on including scripture memorization- Focusing on one scripture a month. (All Scripture is God-breathed and is profitable for instruction, for conviction [of sin], for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be complete and proficient, outfitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work – 2 Timothy 3:16-17)
My prayer this week will be that I can commit to this action plan and overcome distractions.
Is it a challenge for you to make time for God and his word?
Do you already have a daily routine carved out for your time with God?
Let me know about it in the comments below. I’d love to hear about it and get inspired.
